•        How to Adapt to College Life Quickly
•           After entering college, we found, to our surprise, that differences between high school life and college life are great. In high school, we always depended on our parents and teachers to solve all kinds of difficult problems. At college, however, we have to rely exclusively on ourselves. What's more, we have to learn how to get along with our classmates and roommates.
Four years at college is an important yet very short period of time in our life. So it is always expected that we adapt to this life as quickly as possible. But it is a pity that not everyone can do so immediately. Here are some suggestions.
First, get familiar with the main buildings on the campus. Spend one or two hours by yourself or with your classmates to go around the campus so that you can know the location of such important places as the library, the dining room, the post office, the clinic and classrooms. Next, try to be independent. Learn to do such things as making sound decisions on how to spend your time, how to spend your money etc, and washing clothes on your own. Furthermore, form good study habits. Talk with your classmates and learn from their good habits. Finally, try to take part in all kinds of activities to get out of your solitude and get on well with your classmates .
•        Why We Attend College
•           Most of us assume that we go to college in order to be educated, to become scholars, and be useful to society when we complete our studies. Of course, this is true, but there is more to it than that. We go to college not only to learn knowledge, but to prepare ourselves for the real world, for college is a society in miniature. Thus, it teaches us how to handle relationships between different kinds of people later. College life provides many activities, which  is  a stepping stone in the real world. College education also trains a student to develop a mind that is able to think clearly and critically.
While we are at college, we should have as frequent contacts with our teachers as possible. They are as human as we are but with a wider range of knowledge than we do which can help solve our secret little problems. Therefore, they can help us in more ways than just teaching us school subjects.
Some of us tend to go to extremes. We are either too fond of studies and become bookworms or too much occupied by off campus activities. The former kinds of students, doubtlessly, are star pupils at college but not likely to be successful in their career because they lack the knowledge of real human beings and their range of interests is too narrow. The latter, since they lack the basic knowledge of science and humanities, are not likely to succeed, either. Thus we must steer the middle course between these two extremes.
•        My college Life
•        Everything seemed fresh to me when I entered the college. The campus looked very large and there were so many buildings. I was excited and curious when the first class began. The students came from different parts of the country and I had a great number of new schoolmates. In the library, there were so many books and several bright reading-rooms. I was determined to study hard.
•        My college life is entirely different from the life in high school. I live at the dormitory, not at home, as I did in high school. The great difference, I feel, is that at college I should study all by myself. I have to depend on myself in studying and writing term papers, while in high school, my study was usually scheduled by my parents or teachers.
•        College life is an important stage in my life. It is in college that I begin to live and study by myself, and even plan future for myself. Like Newton, I am searching for beautiful shells on the beach of knowledge. Meanwhile, in college I will change and become matured and fully grown up, both physically and mentally.
Holidays
•        Pair /Group Discussion
•        1. How do you know traditional Chinese Holidays and Western Holidays? Please list some important ones.
•        2. Some differences on celebration of holidays among different countries and ages.
•        3. How do you spend the past Labor’s Day?
Nowadays people benefit a lot from the two-day weekend. Like everything else, the two-day weekend has both favorable and mffavorable aspects. Generally, the advantages can be listed as follows.
First, people can relax themselves thoroughly in a two-day weekend, watching TV at home or going shopping. Besides, people can make use of the two-day weekend to take a short journey. Most important of all, people can do a lot of housework, washing, cleaning, putting things in order, and taking care of young children or old parents; They can also study, read hooks or do scientific research etc.
But every coin has two sides. The negative aspects are also apparent. First, the two-day weekend induces people to dip into their purse. To make matters worse, the two-day weekend encourages idleness in some people. Worst of all, having more leisure out of school, some children are led astray.
As to me, I spend the two-day weekend in a positive way. On Saturday, I usually relax myself, watching TV, taking exercise and visiting my friends and relatives, etc.  On Sunday I make a lot of preparations for my next week's life and work.
•        Spring came with all its glories. The new grass exposed its green colour. The pretty flowers opened their blossoms. We were tempted to go for an outing.
•             It was Sunday, the 20th of April. We set out very early on bikes, carrying bottles of champagne, beer and bags of cakes, bacon and cooked eggs.  We rode along the winding paths in the fields, across the meadows and down the roads. The willow were fresh and green. The swallows were flying to and fro, up and down the sky. The birds, like musicians, snang their melodious songs in the trees, and the butterflies, like colorful dancers, were fluttering here and there. We breathed the fresh air deeply and laughed heartily.
•        At 10 a.m. we arrived at the foot of the $hushan Hill.We left our bikes with a bike-repairing shop and began to climb up the Hill. Near the top, under a big tree with luxuriant foliage we had our picnic. We drank and ate, talked and laughed.  After the picnic we stood in the breeze with our hands on our waists, enjoying the fine landscape. Then we lay on the grass talking about our life and studies.
•            At about 4 p. m. , we returned with balmy greenness on our backs and freshness in our hearts.

On Environment
•        sandstorm; garbage/litter/trash; acid rain; carbon dioxide; release; global warming; greenhouse effect; ozone depletion; deforestation; waste of disposal; over-cultivation; preserving biodiversity; energy conservation; fossil fuels; inexhaustible; contaminate; ecology; species; sit back; take action
•        Nature is the only environment on which we rely for our survival.
•        Modern technology owes ecology an apology.
•        Take care of the earth and she will take care of you.
•        Humans are to blame for the worsening of the Earth’s environment.
•        Pollution knows no boundaries between nations. So a global effort is needed to fight against it.
•        Despite the progress that has been made in recent years the environmental situation in our region remains serious.
•        Scientists and environmentalists have repeatedly warned us of serious environmental problems such as water and air pollution, water shortages, diminishing natural resources, toxic wastes , and deforestation.
•        There is only one Earth
