<P>The potential for biotic invasion between the China Yangz River is extremely high, owing to the high degree of climatic similarity, floristic and faunal affinity, and the increasing level of commerce and travel between these two nations. Furthermore, China is experiencing a large amount of "horticultural prospecting" for new, attractive, and versatile plants for the US market. Thus, an assessment of the potential of species originating from both of these countries as invasive threats to the other is of major interest. </P>

<>The project addresses the following questions: <BR>What is the current distribution of selected pilot invasive species in their native, naturalized, and invaded habitats and what physiographic and biological factors determine and/or constrain this distribution? <BR>What might future distributions of these species be if allowed to spread both under current and various climate and land cover/use change scenarios? <BR>How can GIS and remote sensing be incorporated with current ecological modeling practices to predict invasive species range and distribution? </P>
<>The task is <FONT style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: yellow" color=red>a collaborative research-focused effort with the Chinese State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping. While the USGS is most concerned with species of Chinese origin with potential to aggressively spread in the US, our Chinese counterpart will be focusing on species native to North America that have potential to become invasive in China. The two teams will assist each other in sharing data and information on</FONT> species in their home ranges and by jointly developing and evaluating research methods. </P>
<P>he approach consists of the following major steps: <BR>Identify pilot invasive species. <BR>Assemble existing habitat and biological information and map current range and distribution in both native and invaded environments. <BR>Develop models to predict potential habitat and range. <BR>Conduct accuracy assessment and validation. </P>
